Caught My Attention

Last night, I came across Wendy's blog at Mommy Times Four. She has a great blog and a fun company for personalized stationary and other cool items at Duck Duck Goose Designs. But...the reason she really caught my attention...is because of her post Needles upon Needles describing her daughter's need for daily shots to keep her alive. In this post, she has a picture of containers of used syringes. She describes her perspective/struggle as a mom with her daughter's disease. More thoughts on this post to come...

Hi! I just saw your sweet blog (we all love sweet tea here in MS). I'm glad you found my blog. You'll probably over time learn lots about life with diabetes there. From time to time I just need to write to get it out. Abby is the oldest of our 4 little ones, and managing diabetes 24/7 makes life a bit challenging! For her more than anything. Things that we take for granted (eating a bowl of ice cream or going swimming) are big deals for her. Swimming (since that's a regular activity for us right now) requires me to pay her tons of careful attention and feed her often to keep her sugars up. She is a little fish, and this little fish has to snack alot to keep from having dangerous lows while enjoying the pool. A bowl of ice cream would mean shot #5 that day (which on rare occasion she has said "would be worth it.") Anyway...not to go on and on...I'm still not sure why I blogged that that day except for perhaps no other reason than that I literally almost fell apart when I was collecting all those needles to dispose of them. I'd never let that many stay in the house without properly disposing of them...so I'd never seen that many "used" needles in one place. Seeing them all on the container just hit me so hard that day. Abby is one of the toughest and brightest kids you'll ever meet! She's brave, as we all call her, for enduring all this. And she can talk so intelligently about her carb count, insulin levels, exercise, etc. that it blows your mind that she's only five!

Enjoy reading my blog. I fall behind sometimes on it...but I love to share about our crazy little life!

So I just saw that you commented on my blog. I may need to chat with you one day...and pick your brain. I have 2 friends who are adults who were diagnosed as adults....but I don't know any adults who were diagnosed at a young age...and I have so many questions as a mom about things like letting them sleep over, driving alone, going off to college, etc. I know you understand! We're praying over getting on a pump right now. She starts kindergarten in August, and it's a huge decision. Please keep us in your prayers as we try to decide what's best for her.

Hi Wendy...Glad to read your comments. I'd be happy to provide you with any insight that I can into my life with diabetes. I LOVE my pump! I got it about 8 years ago when I began thinking about getting pregnant. Before my pump, I was taking 4 shots daily. When I was young back in the 80s, doctors still had patients only taking 2 shots per day. So...I took my am shot before breakfast and took a pm shot at dinner. Therefore, my mom didn't have to think about a lunch shot for me. We also didn't have nurses in my schools until I got to high school. I remember my mom talking to my teachers each year and we'd provide the teacher with literature on diabetes. She also gave them candy to treat my lows--before glucose tabs. My neighbor is also diabetic (I think he's going in 6th grade), and he got his pump when he was young--I know he had it in 3rd grade...not sure exactly what year he got it. Also...if you know she's swimming all day...have you talked about cutting her insulin back to prevent lows? Ya'll will be in my prayers about your decision on the pump. :)
